Book Crime Watch Using the EEG to diagnose & treat Attention Deficit Disorder By Lynda M. Thompson, Ph.D. Using the EEG to help diagnose Attention Deficit Disorder has been a reality for twenty-five years, but it has not been widely available. New technology (faster computers and smaller, cheaper EEG amplifiers) have lowered the cost and made it possible to do quantitive EEG in office settings, not just research labs. The brain wave pattern shows when the student is focused and concentrating and when their mind had drifted off. Nineteen lead assessments are useful in complex cases, though usually only three sensors are necessary to see the distinct ADD pattern. Monitoring the EEG is also helpful for learning self-control of ADD symptoms. Children and adults can learn to concentrate and reflect before acting using the EEG and a fast computer to feed-back” information about their brain waves. To understand this learning, think of learning to ride a bicycle. Although you cannot tell the child how to balance, the child learns quickly due to the “natural biofeedback” from the inner ear which tells the child’s brain instantly which way he or she is falling. EEG-biofeedback instruments are not as fast as the inner ear at giving feedback but they do show the information about brain waves in about l/10th of a second, faster than you can move to the next thought. A person can leam to shift toward more fast wave activity (focused concentration). Training can also be used to decrease fidgeting and impulsivity. As with riding a bicycle, the skill of being calm, focused and concentrating, once learned, does not appear to be forgotten. Using the Stableford Scoring System, Ttimbull took on the entire membership and while those he bested were "dumped" in his aquarium "with the rest of the fish," a good time was had by all. This high speed network which combines a high speed ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) and HDSL (High Speed Digital Subscriber Line) over an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) backbone, has been operational since September, 1999. Funding was provided through a Ministry of Education infrastructure grant awarded in the Halton Regional Police in Oakville are investigating an attempted robbery that occurred on June 29th at 12:30 AM. A group of five males were in the parking lot of the Tim Hortons restaurant on Iroquois Shore Blvd when another group of five approached and one asked for a cigarette, then asked for the victim’s neck chain. When the suspect was refused, another suspect punched the victim. Other people present then got involved and then all suspects fled in a black Chevrolet Blazer that had tinted windows. Two of the victims received minor cuts and bruising. The suspects are dark skinned. If you know who was involved in this matter, call spring of 1998. Expansion of the network has also allowed inclusion of 12 local libraries and the City of Burlington, Town of Oakville, Town of Milton, and Town of Halton Hills. “We are pleased to be a partner with Bell in this initiative,” says Dusty Papke, director of education, Halton District School Board. “These technological advances will enhance in class applications for student and educators, as well as broaden communications initiatives between our schools, throughout our school system and beyond." “The wonderful result of this partnership with the Halton District School Board is that CRIME STOPPERS CaU 825-TIPS or 1-800-668-5151 Crime Stoppers of Halton. The schools have a student computer ratio of 9:1, extensive infrastructure and long-range planning for growth and improvements, as well as provincially recognized in-service for staff such as the Technology Learning and Curriculum (TLC) program. TLC is just one program that will benefit from the high speed network, as it continues to provide enhanced staff in-service, instrumental in implementing the integration of WAN resources into classroom instruction. The strengthened Internet access will increase the range of learning resources that schools can access, as well as improve the ability of teachers and students to collaborate electronically on a regional and provincial basis and beyond. In addition, teachers will be provided with low cost Internet access at home, so they are able to create lesson plans, leam new skills, and offer increased value to the students.
