Going green is good for business continued from p.6 co-ordinated the program and provided supervision. Each of the children completed 30 hours of community service, by cleaning up local parks and schools or assisting a community group. According to Halton Region, approximately 45 per cent of the average garbage bag is actually made up of food and compostable papers. Your GreenCart will take all that food (fruits, vegetables, meat, bones, pasta, dairy, breads, fats, oils, and candies) and compostable paper (coffee filters, flour bags, paper coffee cups and paper towels) away once a week to be composted instead of going in the landfill. With more opportunities to recycle and compost, the amount of garbage will decrease. Halton Region is aiming to divert 60 per cent of its residential waste away from the landfill, an increase of 17 per cent from our current rate of 43 per cent. This will increase the lifespan of the landfill for an additional seven years. The landfill is a valuable resource for Halton Region and it is important that we protect and work to conserve it. Residents have been receiving the word for many years to be environmentally responsible. Businesses are also discovering that going green is good for business. Reducing waste in the workplace isn't just good for the environment; it's good for the bottom line, employee morale and corporate public relations. Reducing waste at work can help lower operating costs while increasing operational productivity. And from a consumer's perspective, eco-friendly products and services are often more appealing and stand out from the competition. Thank you to all our vendors, partners and volunteers for making our 5th Annual Environmental Awareness Day such a success. 7 | Friday, July 19, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Summer Company The Funnel Cloud Laura Watson Artworks Felipewithf Swim 1 on 1 Oakville VuPoynt Media Group SMART Fit Camps C.E.O.
