Ernie Els, Hunter Mahan and Luke Donald highlight a field of notables who have indicated their intent to compete for Canada's national golf championship. Els and Mahan tied for fourth at the U.S. Open, while Donald finished eighth. Oakville's James Hinchcliffe is doused in champagne by Tony Kanaan (right) and Andretti Autosport teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay (left) following his third win of the IndyCar season at the Iowa Corn 250. Hinchcliffe took the lead on the first lap and essentially held onto it the rest of the way, surrendering his advantage only on pit stops. Notable Canadians who will play July 22-28 at Glen Abbey include Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, Brad Fritsch and Stephen Ames. "We're five weeks out from the RBC Canadian Open and very pleased with how the field is coming together," tournament director Bill Paul said in a release issued Friday. "The strength of our field is a testament to the commitment of our partners at RBC in delivering a world-class event to Canadian golf fans and that's certainly what they can expect when the world's best players tee it up at Glen Abbey Golf Club next month." In addition to the five confirmed Canadians, a number of Canadian golfers will attempt to qualify for the tournament in upcoming weeks. Additional exemptions for Canadian amateur and professional golfers will be announced in the near future. Nearly all 1,400 volunteer committee positions for the Canadian Open have been filled, but a limited number of volunteer positions remain. Slow start dooms Buzz versus Halton Hills The Oakville Buzz allowed nine of the game's first 10 goals in an 11-6 loss to the Halton Hills Bulldogs Saturday in Georgetown. Halton Hills scored eight times in the first period and added another marker seven seconds into the middle frame, decisively winning a showdown between the top two teams in the Southeast Division of the Ontario Lacrosse Association's junior B league. The Bulldogs improved to 152-1 on the campaign, while the Buzz -- which lost by just two goals in the teams' previous meeting this season on May 4 -- fell to 11-6. Greg Campbell had three goals and an assist Saturday for Oakville. Foster Cuomo, Troy O'Donnell and Colton Watkinson had the other Buzz tallies. The defeat put an end to any slim hopes Oakville might have had of overtaking Halton Hills for the division title. The Bulldogs now lead the Buzz by nine points in the league standings, and Oakville has three games remaining (two points are awarded for victories and one for ties). Friday, the Buzz needed overtime to earn a 10-8 win over the Newmarket Saints at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Eddie Renaud and Pat Shea scored in the extra period for the Buzz after New- Lacrosse market forced overtime with the final three goals of regulation, including a shorthanded equalizer with 2:46 to go in the third period. Shea finished the contest with two goals and two assists. Keyan McQueen and Campbell both contributed a goal and two helpers. Sr. B Titans snap four-game skid Cam Monroe had a hat trick and added three assists as the Oakville Titans snapped a four-game losing streak in Ontario Lacrosse Association senior B play with a 10-4 win over the Norwood James Gang Friday in Norwood. Sean Gillies and Brad Gillies each contributed two goals and two helpers for the Titans, and goaltender Jay Preece did not allow a goal until 8:17 remained in the second period. Simon Desousa and Mack Abbott had the other Oakville goals, with Abbott adding four assists. The Titans (3-9) have three games remaining as they attempt to overtake the Owen Sound North Stars for the sixth and final playoff spot. Owen Sound leads Oakville by two points, has a game in hand and has won both head-to-head meetings this season. The Titans, whose game Sunday in Brooklin was postponed to July 7, will visit the St. Catharines Saints Friday. Sr. A Rock continues to play close games Any Major Series Lacrosse fans who attend an Oakville Rock game these days are likely in for an exciting finish. Four of Oakville's last seven senior A games have been decided by one goal and another was a tie, including two of three contests the Rock played in the past week. Oakville edged the host Brooklin Redmen 7-6 in overtime Wednesday, then played to a 6-6 stalemate with the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks Saturday at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Monday at TRAC, the Rock remained within a goal of Brooklin until 2:05 remained in the third period, when the Redmen scored the first of two late markers to down Oakville 10-7.
