www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, June 12, 2013 | 6 The Beaver has usually been supportive of Kevin Flynn, Oakville's sitting MPP . Over two decades as a Town of Oakville councillor, Flynn demonstrated his heart was in the right place when it came to representing our community. His track record is similar at the provincial level. However, as Flynn weighed in with comments about the ndings of Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian and deleted emails on the gas plant cancellation issue -- now under OPP investigation -- his remarks did not sit well with us. Flynn admitted such an act is wrong. Rightly so. Cavoukian found such practice under former premier Dalton McGuinty's government contrary to the law. It may be human nature for Flynn to search for a reason why Craig MacLennan, former chief of staff to the minister of energy, violated the Archives and Recordkeeping Act (ARA) by deleting all emails sent and received. But the power plant scandal came with a huge price tag for all Ontario taxpayers. While Oakville residents are obviously happy with the decision to cancel the plant -- it should never have been allowed here in the rst place. As ngers point and many claim credit for the cancellation, let's not forget the power plant was proposed and headed to Oakville under the Liberals. All cries that nothing could be done to stop it, in hindsight proved wrong -- as the Oakville plant and one in Mississauga were indeed cancelled; the one in Mississauga already under construction. It is not something from which the Liberals saved Oakville. It is something that was introduced on their watch and that they appeared to have little interest in stopping. At rst, Flynn rst remained silent under his oath of of ce and then proposed a private member's bill. Legal machinations by Town Council and very highpro le protests from residents, particularly Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) brought the issue to the fore. Now, we hear words from Flynn like: "I wouldn't want people to be afraid to come to my constituency of ce for help on a personal issue. I wouldn't want them to think, `I'm not going in there to ask for help for my kid on a mental health issue or health issue because some day it will be splashed all over the newspaper before some committee that is on a witch hunt." Individuals and families with mental health issues have nothing to do with the gas plant asco. Flynn is detracting from the much good he has done in the mental health eld by drawing any such comparison. "What we are trying to do is make sure what almost happened in Oakville never happens again in any community including in NDP and PC ridings." Ontario politicians swear an oath to represent all residents fairly. Flynn told the Beaver, his government has offered to put together a select committee of all three parties and provide the opposition with all the documents from all ministries pertaining to the power plants. That hasn't happened to date. In fact, some documents are missing or destroyed. Isn't that what the privacy commissioner was looking into? We need accountability, not political rhetoric and diversionary tactics. I am ashamed to say that this is a poor reection of what Oakville's future is. The family-owed business has been of value to our community for 40 years. The brothers and the exceptional staff have opened their arms to my son and myself as well as many elderly and handicapped people. I have huge concerns on the fate of Oakville with its high-end restaurants and fancy malls. We need to take care of our community and continue to have restaurants that offer a goodvalued meal with the loving touch of the staff. I am hoping the owner of the mall will reconsider the move. Perhaps El Spero could locate on Lakeshore Road, but I do not think it can happen without community support. I am writing this letter and reaching out to ask for support and hopefully make a difference.
