So whether you're a hardcore cyclist, new to the sport or are a tech-savvy rider, Burlington's newest indoor facility is a non-intimidating atmosphere that welcomes everyone. To say World Tour Indoor Cycling is a state-of-the-art training centre would be an understatement. Offering a first-person video experience, Freemotion stationary bikes, and incredible sound immersion technology to not only set, but enhance the mood of the ride, this studio literally has it all. The Myride+ technology used at World Tour Indoor Cycling was brought to Ontario by owner Andrew Thistlethwaite. Thistlethwaite, who found indoor cycling 13 years ago to the betterment of his personal health, found that indoor cycling had become stagnant. Armed with a desire to rewrite the future of the sport, his concept "was to take the riders to a new level of visual stimulation, which for years had been the job of the instructor, to take us on their ride and experience it with music and verbal queuing." He found what he was looking for in California. "After searching the world of indoor cycling, I found the answer right in front of me," he explains, discovering the connection between video and a stimulating riding experience. While there were plenty of riding DVDs on the market, they were one-dimensional, the speed was too fast to be realistic, and ultimately were just visually distracting. The Myride+ technology uses spectacular forward motion video that provides visual stimulation with an ergogenic effect. This first-person video experience allows riders to feel as if they are travelling through a location, just as they would in a real life ride. In the World Tour Indoor Cycling theatre-style studio, riders select one of 24 bikes, all with perfect viewing of the massive 16-by-9-foot screen purchased from Fairview Hi-Fi to immerse themselves in a ride through one of 140 countries. Ride profiles are guided by certified instructors who select music to further stimulate your senses. During a 45 minute to one-hour class you may be surprised to see your instructor hop off his or her bike and work their way around the room. But this is essential to the effectiveness of the ride, Thistlethwaite says. "We're responsible for the people in our classes," he explains. "You never have to worry about the people in the front row, it's the ones in the back row you have to keep an eye on." And instructors do just that, ensuring every rider is in the exact right position to ensure optimal performance and power. The bikes themselves, do of course help. Different than a standard stationary bike you would find in a gym, these Freemotion bikes, designed by Giant, feature technology never before seen on indoor bikes. Carbon drive trains require the rider to generate positive inertia, resulting in a ride that feels just like the real thing. "Our bikes use the Stages operating system that displays and tracks your performance and stores your data. A rear crank power meter displays your wattage," a real power measurement, Thistlethwaite advises, "and all your data can be captured through our Stages app that downloads to your smart phone." Not only can you manage and track your rides, you can also calculate the progress of your fitness or training regime and integrate the studio's Crossfit, Pilates and stretching classes to achieve your health and fitness goals. "I found my health by training on indoor bikes," Thistlethwaite admits. Indoor cycling helped him lose weight initially and also helped rehabilitate a knee injury, so he knows first-hand that the activity works. Located within Crossfit Connection at 845 Harrington Ct., unit 6, World Tour Indoor Cycling will be hosting an open house event on Friday, June 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. with food and refreshments, samples of protein bars and a sneak peek at lululemon's new cycling clothing line, as well as a 30-minute demo ride at 6 p.m. Three more rides will be offered on Saturday morning, June 8 at 9, 9:45 and 10:30 a.m. "I would like to thank The Mohan Group for all their hard work on our logo, branding and visual designs," Thistlethwaite acknowledges, "as well as a special thanks to Jason Bird and Ruth Sheridan of Crossfit Connection for their support, my business partner Dr. Allen Greenspoon for his role in the facility, and facility manager Signy Hawkins, who has put in countless hours of hard work and putting the team in place." Of her first experience at the studio, Stacey Ziebarth says: "What an amazing first ride at World Tour Cycle! I have never experienced anything quite like it. The bikes were incredibly smooth and riding along to video of picturesque country sides from around the world made the session fly by. It actually feels like you are riding outdoors!" Similarly, Lauchlin Cameron says that "time flies with the realism of the experience. It feels like you're riding in the Alps and California coast on the same day."
