U N D E R G R O U N D R A V E R U N Buzz wins pair, Titans snap skid, 'Horns drop opener Sports Briefs Jr. B Buzz The Oakville Buzz posted two more wins last weekend to improve to 6-2 on the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B season. Oakville rode a six-goal effort by Todd Nakasuji to a 14-4 rout of the Mississauga Tomahawks Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, then earned a 10-8 win over the host Newmarket Saints Sunday. Nakasuji added two assists Friday in his season debut after recently returning home from school. Greg Campbell had two goals and four assists, and Colton Watkinson struck for a goal and three helpers. Also scoring Friday for the Buzz were Nathan Maracle, Troy O'Donnell, Ryan Sullivan, Mitch Wales and Justin Martin, making a winner out of goaltender Brent Noseworthy. Wales (four goals) and O'Donnell (two goals, three assists) carried the Oakville attack Sunday. Foster Cuomo had two goals and a helper, Nakasuji scored and had two assists, and Patrick Dehueck chipped in with a single. Goalie D.J. Eckert earned his second victory in as many starts. Oakville is slated to play three games this weekend. The Buzz will be home to Markham tomorrow (Friday, 8 p.m. at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre) before traveling east for road games against Kahnawake Saturday and Akwesasne Sunday. Sr. B Titans The Oakville Titans snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-9 victory over the Sarnia Beavers Sunday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre in OLA senior B play. Mack Abbott had a goal and three assists to pace the Titans' offence, with Simon Desousa adding two goals and a helper and Cam Monroe and Stu Gordon each contributing a goal and two assists. Matt Pelkey (three assists) also enjoyed a three-point evening. Other goal scorers for the Titans were Miller Rusbridge, Kevin Harper, Jeff Sehl, Garrett Clifford and Cody Simpson. Jay Preece recorded the win in net. Friday, the Titans were outscored 10-1 in the first 34 minutes of an 18-7 loss at St. Catharines. Monroe had a hat trick and added two assists for a five-point outing, and Desousa scored and set up two other markers. Connor Latimer tallied twice and Dan Hamlett notched a single for the Titans. Oakville (2-5) will visit the Owen Sound North Stars this Sunday. Sr. Longhorns The Oakville Longhorns dropped their Northern Football Conference season opener 51-28 to the visiting Sudbury Spartans Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field. Sudbury running back Josh Cuomo rushed for six touchdowns, tying the 40-year-old league record held by NFC hall of famer Rick Morenz. The Longhorns have a bye this week and will be back in action Saturday, June 8, when they visit the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers. Monardo was named both the most valuable forward and the most valuable player on the Lakers team. He also received the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Terry Flanagan Courageous Athlete Award and Bud Cooper Coaches Award, and was named Lake Superior State's outstanding male athlete. Monardo led the CCHA last season in goals (20) and ranked 10th in points (31). In conference play, he led the league with 15 goals. Monardo is one of several Oakville Blades products to attend Lake Superior State. Kellan Lain attended the Sault Ste. Marie school before recently signing an NHL contract with the Vancouver Canucks. Former Blades star Nick McParland played for the Lakers for four seasons and now is a member of the East Coast Hockey League's Orlando Solar Bears.
