Relay for Life taking place at OTHS tonight by Mary Collett Special to the Beaver 5 | Friday, May 24, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The students and staff at Oakville Trafalgar High School (O.T.) are once again gearing up for their biannual Relay for Life event tonight (Friday, May 24) at the school. As stated on its website, the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life is a 12-hour fundraising event that brings participants together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember and honour loved ones who lost their battle with cancer, and fight back against all cancers. From dusk until dawn, approximately 900 participants will walk the O.T. track beginning with the Survivors' Victory Lap. As twilight falls, luminaries will be lit in tribute to survivors and to commemorate those who lost their lives to cancer. The school event precedes the Oakville Relay for Life, which will take place Friday, May 31 at Appleby College. This year, the school event is being cochaired by Grade 12 students, Neha Bhasin and Kaitlin Endres. Two years ago, both girls were on teams that were part of the event, an experience that inspired them to take on a leadership role this time. Bhasin was further motivated by the fact that she has extended family members and the daffodil campaign and to volunteer at the Relay for Life held at Appleby College. As this year's school relay draws near, Endres says, "I want to enjoy the night for myself and loved ones, but I know that this is a very worthy responsibility, so I'm prepared to have a busy night." Bhasin and Endres head a volunteer team comprised of almost 300 students and a few teacher supervisors who have been working tirelessly since September to get this event off the ground. Their goal this year is to raise $100,000, see School on p.8 ST.
