Signs honouring those battling cancer and remembering those who have lost that battle painted the entrance walkway to Town Hall for the second annual Team Up for Terry Fox kickoff breakfast Wednesday. The kickoff officially launched the 33rd anniversary of the Terry Fox Run in Oakville, which is set for Sunday, Sept. 15 at Coronation Park. "When we think of Terry we often think of the end of his journey... but on this day in 1980, it was Terry and his friend Doug who embarked on a cross-country journey to change the world for people living with cancer," said Pam Damoff, Ward 2 councillor and chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. "Today, I look around the room and I see the beginning of something special right now because here we will kick off our 2013 run and the teams that will be a part of it. I see the faces of all the `Terry Foxers,' who will continue where Terry left off." The theme of this year's kickoff was motivation -- to encourage new teams to join and old teams to expand. And several speakers did just that, such as Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who is registering a team for his 10th year; Bruna Raimondo of the Terry Fox Foundation, who spoke of the importance of team involvement as the future of the run and the sharing of personal stories to continue to inspire people; Town Councillor Ralph Robinson, a two-time cancer survivor and former chair of the local run for 25 years who spoke of the emotional and worldwide impact of the photo of Fox entering Oakville at 5 a.m. on July 13, 1980 (taken by the Oakville Beaver); and Raylan Atherly, son of Darrell Atherly, who died from cancer and is the inspiration behind Team Darrell, one of the largest teams and fundraisers for the Oakville run. "There's one thing we'll never forget, it's when he (Darrell) said to celebrate his life and at no point mourn his death," said Atherly, noting Team Darrell does just that with more than 100 members and by raising $80,000 for cancer research since 2010. Bell spoke of how funds from the annual run are changing the face of cancer research and helping create new innovated treatments for battling the devastating disease.
