Beaver's Lea named Reporter of the Year Oakville Beaver news reporter David Lea has won the Stephen Shaw Award for Reporter of the Year in the Ontario Community Newspapers Association's (OCNA) 2012 Better Newspaper Competition. Placing second in the Photographer of the Year category was Eric Riehl, a photographer who also works with the Halton Division of Metroland West Media Group. The wins were announced Friday night at the OCNA gala held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Vaughan. "Sweet," said Lea, in reaction to being announced the winner. "Recognition by your peers and the journalism industry is really about the most amazing thing you can get. I'm just overwhelmed," Lea said when he learned he was a top three finalist in the category. "I am really proud of David and his dedication to community journalism. He is able to make people feel comfortable talking about their issues and that is key to his success as a reporter," said Metroland West Media Group's in the Community Service Award category for its partnership with Sheridan College on the Celebrating Success project, where editorial, photography and ad sales for the publication were produced entirely by 2012 graduate marketing students. "It was an interesting project we did with Sheridan College as a community partner," said Beaver Advertising Director Daniel Baird. Lea, who graduated from the 5 | Wednesday, March 27, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Eric Riehl print journalism program at Loyalist College in Belleville in 2006, has been working at the Beaver for six years, covering local news, police, Town council, politics and features. "I worked at various other jobs where you do the same thing day in and day out, and I quickly got tired of that. They're not interesting," he said earlier this year. "But this job, every day you do something different." see Series p.11 David Lea Halton Region Division Editor in Chief Jill Davis. "This recognition is well-deserved. David, who has been a lead news reporter with the Beaver for numerous years, is a hardworking and diligent journalist who is always up for a challenge," said Beaver Managing Editor Angela Blackburn, who nominated Lea for the award. Riehl's win was equally impressive for someone relatively new in his field. "This type of recognition is unprecedented for someone who has only been working at our papers for a little over a year. It bodes well for Eric's abilities and what he will bring to the Beaver in the future," said Riziero Vertolli, director of photography for the Halton Division.
