Nicola feels humiliated and wants to drop the course. · `Sonja' has been painstakingly questioning her gender since middle school. She experiences extreme dysphoria (genderrelated discomfort) when forced to choose between the boys' and girls' bathrooms. Sonja doesn't identify as specifically male or female. · `Nikita' has been bullied for as long as he can remember. Since the start of high school, he has been attacked twice and fears going to the bathroom because he knows teachers can't keep him safe there. Before the winter break, a student approached Kaleidoscope about the possibility of creating a gender-neutral bathroom after one such incident. After years of stories like these, Kaleidoscope wanted to offer a discrete, safe space open to persons of all genders and circulated the petition. Blakelock's gender-neutral bathroom will be ready following the exam break. Located in the upper east hallway, the room contains both a stall and a urinal and can be locked from the front door. It is directly beside a similar staff bathroom. Designating these spaces ensures the safety and comfort of Blakelock's population and sets a continued standard of sensitivity to issues of equality.
