Health department issues extreme cold weather alert for Halton starting today HOME IMPROVEMENTS The Halton Region Health Department has issued an extreme cold weather alert for today (Wednesday, Jan. 23). The alert is issued when temperatures are expected to fall below -15 degrees Celsius, not including windchill, or when weather conditions are severe enough to warrant alerting the community to the risks involved with prolonged exposure. The alert is in place until temperatures rise above -15 degrees Celsius. The health department says anyone can be affected by extreme cold-related weather conditions, depending on a person's length of exposure or exertion levels. Those who are especially at risk include older adults (65 or older), infants and young children, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts (hikers, skiers), homeless persons, or those lacking shelter, proper clothing or food. The health department reminds people to dress appropriately and to cover exposed skin. It recommends people to keep a car survival kit in the car at all times.
