Student spirit Teachers didn't protest in Halton Secondary school teachers across the province spent yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon rallying outside the offices of their local MPPs. Halton teachers, however, joined their counterparts in Waterdown, rather than picketing outside of Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn's office, where they've held rallies twice already in the last few months. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) protests were not held during school hours, but after school. "We've only had one target (Flynn), so it's better to spread it around a bit," said OSSTF District 20 (Halton) president Brad Fisher. "Waterdown gives us access to somebody who is a Liberal and is well known in the area." The Halton teachers joined the OSSTF District 21 (Hamilton-Wentworth) protest at Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale MPP Ted McMeekin's office in Waterdown. The District 21 protest had been organized previously and was relatively close to Halton, so it was easy for local teachers to join it, Fisher said. Furthermore, numerous unions representing teachers and education support workers will be at an Ontario Federation of Labour rally for rights and democracy at Allan Gardens in Toronto on Saturday, Jan. 26, followed by a march to the Ontario Liberal leadership convention at Maple Leaf Gardens. 5 · Thursday, January 17, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Graham Paine/ OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog for extracurriculars: White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) students took part in Sport Your Extracurricular Day, by wearing their team or club jerseys to school yesterday (Wednesday).
