No reason to get behind the wheel impaired We all share a responsibility to keep our roads safe, says Halton Regional Police Service Deputy Chief Bob Percy. He said drivers literally hold the key to eliminating impaired driving. "There really is no reason to get behind the wheel after you have been drinking," said Percy. "The time it takes to call a taxi or find another way home is a minor inconvenience compared to the possible life and death consequences if you drive impaired. "Part of this responsibility includes monitoring others; friends, coworkers, and family, to ensure that everyone arrives home safe and sound. Impaired driving remains Canada's No. 1 criminal cause of death with four Canadians killed and 200 injured in alcohol-related crashes everyday. So far this year, there have been more than 400 12-hour licence suspensions in Halton because of impaired driving. "Death and injuries on our roads due to impaired driving are devastating to our community. The impact from any one incident ripples throughout our families, neighbours and communities," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "For this reason, road safety is a top priority for Halton Regional council. We want Halton drivers to feel safe on our roads. By partnering with the Halton Regional Police Service, we're working together to make sure this holiday season is a safe one for everyone." Through the Halton Drive SAFE program and its Safe Roads... Your Call campaign, drivers can see signs throughout the region reminding them to call 9-1-1 if they see a suspected impaired driver on the roads.
