Team Brother Bear will deliver at Christmas By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville's Team Brother Bear (TBB) had a successful fundraising gala this year, raising $35,000 for the work being done at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. However, the organization prides itself on the successes of its other, smaller fundraising initiatives that took place earlier this year that will enable it to support more families this holiday season. These fundraisers collected approximately $5,000. "It's really great. At the beginning of the year, we really did want the holiday mission to start to evolve," said TBB chairperson Addison Brasil. The $5,000 was raised this year at the Mother's Day High Tea and pub night at Shakers Tap & Grill. It doubles the organization's traditional tally from its holiday mission fundraisers. The head of the social work unit at the hospital, David Brownstone, provides TBB with family referrals accompanied with an overview of their needs, wants and hopes. TBB then makes sure those families have the Christmas they need to get through their difficult time. That can be realized by making sure the children have presents, sometimes it means helping families getting the necessities of life, while still making sure the children get what they need or want. Whatever form the gifts take, TBB works to ensure the family can have lasting memories. "We try to focus on making memories with what we do. We always try to inspire families to stop and make a memory, whether that's all of them going to the movies or going out to dinner, or going to the theme park," Brasil said. Having a genuine family Christmas is important for families, something the Brasil family knows quite well. TBB was founded in the memory of Austin Brasil, Addison's Since 1952 younger brother, who died at age 17 after a lengthy battle with an inoperable brain tumour. He was cared for at the Hospital for Sick Children. Brownstone was the family's social worker at the time. While Austin was going through his treatments, there were people who ensured his family had a chance to make memories of its own. "People did that for us when Austin was sick. They said, `Go out. Have a whole night out as a family on us,' and if it weren't for those nights, we wouldn't have stopped because there was so much going on all the time when we were caring for him," Addison said.
