The War of 1812 veterans were added to the Cenotaph as part of a renovation completed shortly before Remembrance Day. "What was there previously were the names of Oakville veterans from the First and Second World Wars. We wanted to put up a wall that would honour those who have served in other military engagements and conflicts and theatres beyond World War II," said Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space with the Town. "One of the reasons we wanted to do this was so we could add something for Colonel (Geoff) Parker who died in Afghanistan." Mark said the Town worked with a committee, including veterans and Oakville Historical Society members, and added a section to the monument bearing the names of two local men who fought in the War of 1812.
