Police make an arrest in distraction scam case Halton police have made an arrest in connection with a distraction scam going on in Halton this past summer. On the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 26, police said a woman was walking in the area of Parklane Road when a vehicle pulled up next to her. The male driver began asking the woman about a church and started crying, stating he and his companion were giving away souvenirs to people in memory of his late mother. Police said a woman in the vehicle's backseat then put a ring on the woman's finger and a necklace around her neck. A short time after the vehicle drove away, the woman realized her own necklace had been removed, allegedly while interacting with the couple. The jewelry the woman was given turned out to be worthless. An arrest warrant has also been issued for Crin Chiciu, 35, of Toronto on a charge of theft under $5,000 in connection with the same incident. Police said a similar distraction theft happened in Acton the same day as the Oakville incident. In the Acton case, a necklace was stolen from a woman after suspects put a fake necklace around her neck. Other similar thefts were reported in Hamilton earlier in August. No charges have been laid in connection with the Acton incident as of yet and police previously stated they are unsure whether the Hamilton incidents are connected. with the more revealed translating into a bigger prize.
