Message is hitting home By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF For the second year, Abbey Park High School students learned about the issue of human trafficking with the help of Oakville-based freethem. The Glen Abbey high school's social change club held a Human Trafficking Awareness Week recently in recognition of the week that ran from Nov. 12-16. "We want to raise awareness in our school," said club member Monisha Kanra, a Grade 12 student. "There are so many students who don't know about what's going on. It even happens in Oakville. We inform them and let them know how huge this issue is and how it's a growing industry." The entire week, the club ran an information desk in the them since he ran a fundraiser for the group at his former school, King's Christian Collegiate, a year ago, which raised $7,000. He has since graduated. On the final day of the week, many students wore purple to show support for the cause and watched a screening of the film, Taken, starring Liam Neeson, after school. The film deals with issues of prostitution and human-trafficking. Free-them founder Shae Invidiata of Oakville also visited. "I think the most shocking thing students learn is that this is happening here," she said. "There's information here about India and overseas about what's happening, but when they start to read stories that are happening here, that's when it really starts to hit home." 5 · Friday, November 30, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Shae Invidiata school foyer with club members and a free-them volunteer staffing the desk.
