www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 30, 2012 · 4 Ford adding third line at Oakville Assembly plant By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Ford of Canada announced Wednesday it will soon begin making good on terms in its recent agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union by adding a partial third shift to the Oakville Assembly Plant. The new shift, which will create approximately 300 jobs, is expected to start in the first quarter of 2013. "The third shift is being added to the body, paint and pre-trim departments of the plant," said Lauren More, vice-president of public affairs with Ford. "Due to the high consumer demand for vehicles built at Oakville Assembly -- the Edge, the Flex, the MKX and the MKT -- the third shift is required." More said Ford employees who were laid off from the company's other facilities, including the St. Thomas assembly plant, which closed in 2011, will be offered the new positions first. She noted the company has only just begun talking to those employees so, at this point, it was difficult to say how many will make the transition and how many positions "The third shift is being added to the body, paint and pre-trim departments of the plant." Lauren More, vice president, public affairs, Ford of Canada will need to be filled by new hires. Ford has about 800 employees on layoff. The company agreed in negotiations with CAW to investments expected to create a total of 600 new jobs, mainly at the Oakville Assembly Plant. More said Ford will continue to show its commitment to the four-year deal, signed in September 2012, with the other 300 jobs expected to come when the company begins production on a new type of vehicle. "We have plans and a proposal in to produce a product based on a new global platform at Oakville assembly," she said. "That has the potential of creating more than 300 positions."
