Administrative costs are very lean; 97 cents of every dollar raised goes to the operation of the house and majority of the funds are spent on bedside service. Every decision is considered for its impact on residents and their families. It's plain, it's easy, it's simple -- excellent end of life palliative care. "We kept it simple," said Anderson. "I'm disappointed that some of the hospices now are so big and so complicated they're having a problem raising money to cover the costs, because the more programs you have, the more admin people you have to have." Most are top heavy with administrative staff, which includes full-time fundraisers and executive directors, she said. Anderson draws no salary. What drove her -- someone with no healthcare background and a widow and mother from a working class Scottish background who knew firsthand the physical and emotional toll of caring ON AS SEEN CITYLINE AS SEEN O N CHCH TV on pieces brought in during the month of November No Mo' Tax! "I think it's just stubbornness. I thought, `No, no. This can't be,'" she said matter-offactly. "It hasn't been easy. We didn't get any funding in the beginning." The increasing demand for the hospice's service is such that the average length of stay has decreased. "The need is so much greater out there," said Anderson. "I don't know if we're better known, I don't know if it's because there's more cancer." Funding is finally picking up pace, said Anderson. "It has to because of the aging population. I think it's out of necessity; in fact I'm sure it is. That's usually where funding comes from." People come from all over the province to talk to Anderson about opening a hospice. Her message is always the same: "don't build a big building, don't spend all the money on administration and furniture because you won't be able to afford it." In the end, they don't listen, she said. The $700,000 raised to maintain IAH is about half the cost of what many other hospices must raise annually. "I think we've earned their respect. We have an impeccable reputation. I think one of the things they like is that we put so much money into the operation of the house and not overhead. I think people know now that I'm really serious about what I do here. I was born with a real sense of responsibility, which can be a real curse, too, but I feel people deserve to be treated with respect, especially when they're dying." ··· IAH's 15th anniversary is being commemorated with a 15th Anniversary Scottish Evening Saturday (Nov. 3) at Credit Valley Golf & Country Club, beginning with a champagne reception at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature the St. Andrew's Pipers and Scottish Highland Dancers from Aspects of Dance. There will also be a DJ, live auction and a raffle.
