Westby and his family now sponsor three children -- Bwanga, 10, from Congo, Ester, 5, from Malawi and Veronica, 5, from Mozambique. "We share the same values as World Vision. It's just a really good fit with helping people and being an example to our girls," said Westby. "They can see what life is like for kids their age in other parts of the world." He included his four-year-old daughter, Natalie, on several aspects of his campaign. She created poster boards to track his progress and gave him a hand in cooking meals for his recent African-themed sponsor party, he said. "My daughter has this heart of compassion. She's quite often looking at her possessions and she (asks), `Can we send this?' or `How can we send food to this person?' or `What kind of Christmas presents can we send to them?'" The campaign is important for Westby because he wants his children to have perspective on helping others. Sponsoring other children makes them aware of their hardships, he said. "They can start to build a connection with people that aren't physically close or even similar to them in their language or the way they dress," said Westby. "Because we are blessed and fortunate, it is our responsibility now to help others. "I think it's going to help my daughters have a heart for compassion, locally and internationally," he added. When training for marathons, Westby usually spends 16-18 weeks in preparation. He started training for this marathon in June -- running four to six times a week, totaling between 70-100 km. He trains with an Oakville-based group of runners, dubbed Connor's Runners. "In the past, I've trained more on my own for marathon distance. (But) I felt since I was going to be running a campaign, it was all about others. I wanted to be in a community of runners while I was training," said Westby. Along with finding sponsors, Westby is raising money for the food shortage in West Africa. Funds will provide agriculture support, clean water and emergency relief. "If I don't hit 42, it's not a failure. Every one I can add is changing a life. I truly believe that child sponsorship is the best way to change a child's life in Africa. I don't think it's just a one-time thing for me. I think it's going to be my lifelong passion."
