Diamond Jubilee medal bestowed on 15 more locals By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Fifteen more Oakville residents were recognized Friday for the above-and-beyond contributions to their community with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Created to mark the 60th anniversary celebration of Queen Elizabeth's coronation, the commemorative medal is being given to 60,000 Canadians this year, 30 of whom are from Oakville. "The Queen's life is one consumed with a duty to others... Today, we are recognizing the nobility in otherwise ordinary citizens," said Oakville MP Terence Young, who once again hosted Friday's presentation at the Harbourfront Banquet Hall and Conference Centre in Bronte -- a similar event took place in the spring (June 1), awarding 15 individuals with the royal honour. The Halton Youth Symphony Orchestra's Chris Emery, Katelyn Emery, Andrew O'Brien and Mykala O'Neil were also on hand to play O Canada and God Save the Queen for those attending the event. Hundreds of nominations were considered in OakvillebyYoung,OakvilleCommunityFoundation CEO Rusty Baillie and former United Way of Oakville CEO Barbara Burton. To be eligible, nominees must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, have made significant contributions to a Canadian province, territory, region or community or an achievement abroad that brought credit to the country -- and have been alive since Feb. 6, 2012, the 60th anniversary system of mentoring bereaved parents. Education · Ed Viana -- a Halton Catholic school board trustee for more than 32 years, Viana has enhanced early years and language programs for new immigrant families in Oakville. Voluntary Service · Gerald Popp -- Popp has volunteered in several positions for the Canadian Rehabilitation Foundation for the Disabled, Oakville Community Foundation, Oakville Chamber of Commerce and United Way Oakville. · Margaret "Peg" Mason -- a lifelong volunteer, Mason has worked with St. John's Parish, the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels, among several other organizations. · Lawrence Zimmering -- a founding member and director/environmental chair of Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA), Zimmering has also served on several religious, hospital and arts boards. · Karina Scali -- a volunteer with pre-school and Kindergarten children, Scali has developed a play-based curriculum that teaches children about their faith through music. · Irene Shields -- Shields has served the community for 50 years (since 1961) in the Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 114.
