Just after 5 p.m., the TOWARF crew of three found the 20-foot sailboat with two people onboard grounded just off the harbour. "The seas at the time were under a metre, but the visibility was almost zero," reported TOWARF Commander Richard Bee. TOWARF secured and then towed the sailboat into the outer harbour, with an escort from the Canadian Coast Guard who arrived shortly after. There were no injuries. Bee said fog conditions make rescue missions more complicated, but in this instance, technology did its part in the rescue. "We have a pretty good radar system onboard so we were able to use radar to help us find the vessel. If they had been in a smaller vessel, the radar would have been less effective," he said. "If they had been in a small aluminum fishing boat or something, that profile would have been much more difficult to detect." Bee asks boaters to check the weather before they decide to go out on the water. There had been a fog warning most of the day on Oct. 3. TOWARF is looking for new volunteers and it's hosting a recruitment event on Oct. 28 that starts at 9 a.m. at its headquarters located at 2 Navy St. Candidates will be put through the paces in fun and challenging events that test individuals physically and mentally.
