The group provides support, education and research funding. Team Brother Bear was founded in memory of Austin, inspired by his heroism, and Addison has been its vocal leader as chair of the non-profit organization. "I remember asking him, `Why were you doing that? You're going through treatment yourself, you don't need to be doing that,'" Addison recalled. "He said, `I'm three years into fighting this and I just want to give back and raise awareness.' He was very passionate about it. It just sparked an inspiration and I became very passionate about it, too." Austin inspired it, but the knowledge other children are suffering as the Oakville youth did is what has kept the group going. "We're all only human just trying to do good for everybody and it's definitely rewarding. It's well needed in the brain tumour community," Addison said. This year added a new struggled to the journey. Addison lost his father, Henry Brasil, suddenly and tragically this summer. "We decided we really wanted to push forward and do it in their memory and in their honour, but also to take a moment to celebrate what we have been able to do in Austin's name," Addison said. Despite not having his father's help any more, Addison said there is an incredible amount of sup- port around him in the community who rushed to his aid. "My dad, he would go on earlier in the year, saying, `This is going to be Team Brother Bear's biggest year yet. We'll make Austin proud this year.' I had to take that in stride and go with it. I really do think it's going to be a great night," Addison said. Team Brother Bear's own initiatives include its annual holiday mission, for which it partners with SickKids. Each year, the hospital refers three families who have children suffering from a brain tumour and Team Brother Bear goes to work trying to make the family's journey a little easier. Team Brother Bear members buy gifts, wrap them up and then they are delivered to the families. "For me, it's obviously heartbreaking to see these children struggle in the same way that my brother did," Addison said. "But, I feel this sense of responsibility having gone through it myself to do what I can to help. I am young and able, and I see areas where I could help and I could make a little difference and where our team could do (more). If anything, it just inspires me to be more involved and to try and help as much as I can." Gala sponsorship opportunities are still available and Team Brother Bear is still accepting silent auction items. Tickets cost $55 and are available at support@ teambrotherbear.ca or 289-837-1087.
