Son to host SASS in memory of his mother By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER A stomach pain in July would become an unstoppable angiosarcoma cancer that would take the life of an Oakville wife and mother three months later. In October 2011, Janice Silver, 56 years old and a resident of Oakville for more than 20 years, lost her battle to the rare cancer, leaving behind her husband, Oliver, and their sons, Alexander and Jonathan. To keep the memory of his mother alive, 24-year-old Alexander and family friend Jacqueline Di Filippo co-founded the non-profit organization Silverhearts in honour of Janice. According to the Silverhearts website, Janice was involved with various charitable works throughout Halton and beyond. Janice helped with the Felix Centre, Darling Home for Kids, Toronto Kidsfest, St. James Parish and countless programs at St. Vincent School and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. A 10-year volunteer with Milton's Darling Home for Kids, Janice was recognized during the organization's fifth annual volunteer and donor recognition event, held earlier this year, and called an "integral part of the volunteer team." The goal of the Silverhearts foundation is to raise funds to help the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton treat others with cancer and beat the devastating disease. To help see that dream realized, Silverhearts is hosting its inaugural elegant fundraiser this Saturday (Oct. 13) called the Silverhearts Annual Saturday Social (SASS). The evening event is geared toward 20- to 30-year-old Oakville adults who can dress formally, dance and network, all the while supporting the cause. "There is nowhere in Oakville where young adults can really dress up, feel and look good, meet people of their own age and have fun networking," said Alexander, noting he hopes this will be the first of many annual Silverhearts events. "This demographic represents the next generation of home buyers, car purchasers and parents, and are a key part of Oakville's future." With more than 200 people expected to attend, organizers hope to raise $10,000 for the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and his wife, Wendy, will also be attending the fundraiser and are scheduled to draw the grand-door prize winning ticket for a 42-inch plasma TV. In addition to drinks, hors d'oeuvres and music by Toronto's DJ Mike Tracey, the event will feature a silent auction to help raise funds for the cancer centre. Tickets cost $50, which include admission, one drink and an opportunity to win the grand door prize, and can be purchased by e-mail at silverheartsfoundationcharity@ gmail.com -- organizers ask to indicate your name, number of tickets needed and contact information in the e-mail. The fundraiser will be held in the Clublink Room at the Glen Abbey Golf Club, 1333 Dorval Dr., and begins at 7:30 p.m. -- dress code is business formal attire.
