Brookdale gets in the pink for Terry Fox Run By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF When John Pullen became principal of Brookdale Public School a few years ago, he wanted to give his students an incentive to collect more pledges for their Terry Fox Run. That year and the one that followed, Pullen wore a dress on the days of the annual run but only if the students met a minimum fundraising goal. Now in his third year as principal, he wanted to raise even more money so he gave his students an extra incentive, and they surely did not disappoint. He told the youths when they raised $500, he would don women's clothing once again and, at $700, he would shave his head, something he had never done before. The students blew those goals out of the water and raised approximately $1,100, forcing the principal to wear pink the entire day of the school's Terry Fox Run on Friday, Sept. 21, and to shave his head just before heading out into the community for the run. "I've never actually had my head shaved before. It's got that bristly feel to it. I imagine about 150, about half the kids, came up and they just had to feel it. It really focused the attention this year on the issue and I think that was good," Pullen said after the run. "I have to keep getting the message out there (of) why we do this, it isn't because I look weird.
