Nixing Oakville plant has a $40M price tag Continued from page 1 3 · Wednesday, September 26, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com In return, the Province's Ontario Power Authority will spend $210 million for gas turbines for the new facility, money Bentley said would be recouped from lower prices charged by TransCanada over the 20-year deal. Russ Girling, TransCanada's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement he was "very pleased" with the arrangement. The move comes less than three months after the Liberals announced it cost $190 million to terminate a similar gas-fired plant near Sherway Gardens. That facility was aborted in the final weeks of last fall's election campaign, helping the Liberals win four seats in Mississauga and Etobicoke. Stopping the Oakville plant a year earlier contributed to Liberal MPP Kevin Flynn's re-election because neighbours were strongly opposed. To underscore the political significance of the move, McGuinty was to be in Oakville Tuesday to remind residents what the Liberals did for them. Despite Monday's disclosure, Bentley still faces contempt of parliament charges over the debacle. The opposition-pushed censure stems from his past refusal to reveal terms of the Oakville deal and will be debated Tuesday. The minister stressed the government has now complied with Speaker Dave Levac's order to release all documents related to the matter. "We said we would release the documents, and sought only to ensure they were not released pre- OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTO / @halton_photog SIGN OF THE TIME: A runner passes one of the many protest signs that were plentiful in Oakville as the Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) campaigned against siting a power plant in southeast Oakville. Even though plants have been abandoned in both Oakville and Mississauga, power authority vice-president Kristin Jenkins said the urgency for electricity has eased, so planners have an extra four years before more capacity is needed. "The planning for the major upgrade is under way now, and it's expected it will be built and in service for 2018. It is a big project," said Jenkins, who did not have details of what's entailed. Still, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said it's a "fiasco" that two plants have been stopped to save the jobs of five Liberal MPPs. "Liberal seats are going for about $40 million apiece. Only the Liberals would think that saving... five Liberal seats is a good deal for taxpayers no matter what the cost is," said Horwath. Progressive Conservative House Leader Jim Wilson said Bentley and the Liberals must be held to account. "This is the most serious contempt motion before the house in 104 years and no future government should have to go to this extreme," said Wilson, a former health minister who resigned from his post in 1996 because an aide leaked confidential information about a doctor. "Ministers are there to uphold the law, not break the law," he said. "And we still have to get to the bottom of this." The 15 bankers' boxes of documents -- provided to the media on USB keys to save paper -- contain a trove of information. Tory MPP Vic Fedeli (Nipissing), his party's energy critic, said the papers contain warnings that it could cost an additional $200 million for highvoltage transmission lines to take much-needed power to the GTA. Those wires are needed due to the lack of new plants, noted Fedeli. Indeed, the 36,000 pages of documents include internal e-mails from OPA officials admitting "our hands are tied anyway... (the) government has backed us into a corner... let's just get on with it." -- With files from John Spears, Toronto Star Inside Opinion............................................6 Artscene.........................................24 Sports.............................................26 Classified........................................28 Full Delivery: Real Estate, Sport Chek, Synergy Contracting, JYSK, Rona, National Sports, Shopping News, XS Cargo, Denny's, Home Depot, Staples/Business Depot For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com LUNCH AND LEARN ABOUT INVESTMENT FEES DATE Thursday, October 11th Friday, October 12th Lunch: 12:00pm - 12:45pm LOCATION Peter Watson Investments 220 Randall Street, Downtown Oakville Free Parking OPEN HOUSE SATURDAY SEPT. 29 12P.M.-2P.M. 905-829-9400 2828 Kingsway Dr., Oakville www.mathnasium.com/oakville oakville@mathnasium.com REGISTER SAT TO WIN ONE MONTH FREE TUITION 50% OFF FIRST MONTH PROGRAM FEE ON 6-12 MONTHS CONTRACT OFFER EXPIRES OCT. 6, 2012.
