www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 14, 2012 · 12 Terry Fox Run expected to draw a crowd in Oakville Sunday Oakvillians will be joining hundreds of thousands of people across Ontario this Sunday (Sept. 16) taking part in the annual Terry Fox Run -- a fundraising event now considered an autumn Canadian tradition. In 1980, when Terry Fox decided to run across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise funds for cancer research, he knew he faced an immense challenge. After running the equivalent of nearly a marathon a day for 143 days, he was forced to stop when the cancer recurred in his lungs. Terry's Marathon of Hope came to an end, but he ignited a cancer crusade among Canadians that has lasted more than three decades. In 2011, millions of Ontarians participated in 225 community Terry Fox Runs and 3,900 school events, raising $12 million in the process for cancer research, according to the Oakville Terry Fox Run committee. The Oakville run will be held at Coronation Park, on Lakeshore Road, east of Third Line, and begins at 10 a.m. -- registration starts at 9 a.m. Participants can choose to run, walk, bicycle, board, in-line skate, push a stroller or walk the dog along a five-kilometre or 10K route, as well as take part in a 2K family walk/run. Opening ceremonies will also begin at 9 a.m., with former Toronto Argonaut and Oakville resident Dan Ferrone hosting. This year's event will also feature a kids' activity tent, music, food and other activities. Participants are invited to bring their own water bottles this year and refill them before/after the run at Coronation Park. Organizers are reminding participants there is no on-site parking at Coronation Park and those arriving by car should observe all parking rules on nearby side streets. Also new to this year's event are special `In Memory' and `In Honour' road signs. "We hope everyone will personalize their signs with special messages, photos and other memories of their loved one and bring it to the run site... and post it along the run route for everyone to see," Pam Damoff, Town councillor and chair of Oakville's Terry Fox Run, said in a release. Signs cost $5 each and can be purchased prior to run day by contacting Nathalie de Caen at ndecaen@hotmail.com or at Coronation Park on the morning of the event. Pledge sheets can be downloaded at www. terryfoxrun.org. Formoreinformation,e-mailoakvilleterryfox@ gmail.com or contact Keri Schoonderwoerd at 905-469-0828, or Pam Damoff at 905-582-4237.
