www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 6, 2012 · 18 First-year junior coach confident he'll quickly adjust Continued from page 17 the Oakville Rangers '97 AAA squad. Gomes, a former junior A player himself, coached the Toronto Nationals midgets to the Greater Toronto Hockey League finals a season ago. This will be Gomes' first experience coaching junior A, but he believes it won't be too much of an adjustment. "The junior game is obviously bigger, stronger, faster. But when you compare it to midget AAA hockey, I'd say the systems are very similar. They're just more refined at the junior level," Gomes said. "We hope to be able to do a little bit more in terms of enhancing the power play, make it a little more sophisticated. But, at its heart, hockey is hockey." Gomes will be assisted by Jeff Schomogyi, Matt Craig and Mark Edwards, all of whom have university hockey experience. Schomogyi played at the University of Massachusetts and was the head coach of the OHL Cup champion Mississauga Rebels last season; Craig is a Yale grad who currently works for the National Hockey League Players Association; and Mark Edwards, a Queen's University alumnus, specializes in video breakdown and statistical analysis. The Blades have also partnered with Beyond The Next Level, a well-respected hockey fitness training facility in town. Gomes said this year's edition of the Blades will emphasize speed and skill, hoping to take advantage of the Olympic-sized ice surface at Sixteen Mile. "That surface lends itself to the brand of hockey we want to play. It's very exciting for the fans to watch that," said Gomes, who resists any comparisons between this year's club and Blades teams of the past. "We're going to set our own bar. Our own bar is set very high," he said. "We know what our vision is and what our goals are, and we're working very hard to achieve them." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports Kevin Gomes Track and field athlete making strides Joining the Oakville Track Club/ Athletiques International has paid immediate dividends for Jacob Turk. The 15-year-old barely qualified for the provincial high school track-and-field championships earlier this year, finishing well out of the medals in both javelin and long jump competition. But, shortly after joining the local club, Turk won the district championship in javelin and added a silver in long jump to earn a spot on the district team for the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario championships. Turk went on to become the Ontario Legion champion in javelin, throwing 51.57 metres to win by more than nine metres. He also finished just out of the medals in the long jump, leaping 5.91m. Both his javelin and long jump performances were personal bests and were enough to get him selected to represent Ontario at the national Legion championships in Charlottetown. Turk's preparation for nationals were disrupted by an injury that cost him two weeks of training, but he still managed to win javelin silver with a throw of 49.03m. He also jumped 5.71m in the long jump, finishing fourth. Turk hopes to qualify for next year's World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.
