Numerous camp staff were singled out for going above and beyond this summer. Erin Gamble, 21, and Ashley Marcos, 23, were chosen by their peers to each receive the Ray McConnell Award -- named after the former camp leader in the Oakville Parks and Recreation Summer Activity Centre program from 1979-81. McConnell consistently displayed outstanding leadership during his employment, but lost his life on Sept. 1, 1982 in a motorcycle accident involving an impaired driver. Gamble received the award because of her stellar performance as a senior camp leader this summer. During the awards presentation, she was praised for her organizational skills, her ability to keep her cool in the face of difficult situations, her dedication and her passion. "It's such a huge honour to be one of the recipients this year," she said. "I'm in shock." Marcos received the award for providing her staff with a consistent, reliable and engaging support system, as well as the amount of effort she put into bettering the camp program, her ability to inspire, and for the countless hours she spends deciding on the best placement fits for her staff and campers. "There are so many other people who could be up there who are just like us," said Marcos, choking back tears. "I'm so happy to share this honour with Erin." Rosemary McConnell (Ray's mother) and her granddaughter Samantha Pufek presented Marcos and Gamble with their awards. Rosemary said the awards night is a fitting legacy for her son. "It's a wonderful experience to come here year after year and realize what an impression Ray had on the program," she said. "I'm quite humbled he is thought of so highly today almost 30 years after his death." Camp staff who were also nominated for the Ray McConnell award included Matt Harper, Katie Murray, Danielle Megannety, Michael Marchione, Kristy Race and Dana Shaban. Rachel Jeffers and Zack Shaban received the camp staff Rookie of the Year Award.
