The majority of the starts were concentrated in the City of Hamilton. Over 200 single-detached homes and townhouses were started in the City of Hamilton, up from nearly 150 starts a year ago. In neighbouring Burlington and Grimsby, starts dropped by 82 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively. There were no starts of semi-detached homes or apartments in July. Demand for new homes has been rising since the beginning of the year in all markets in the CMA. This has been prompted partially by the decline in the number of homes listed for sale in the resale market. "Single-detached and townhouse starts in the City of Hamilton contributed to strong increase in total starts in the city last month," noted Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst H ousing Starts J uly 2012 H amilton CMA* Single Semi TH City of H amilton Singles and Townhouses Drive Total Starts 600 Total N umber of Starts 500 400 300 200 100 0 2011 2012 T otal % Chg H amilton CMA J ul-12 124 0 95 0 219 0.9% 910 52 612 404 1978 65.9% J ul-11 136 0 65 16 217 767 6 257 162 1192 Burlington J ul-12 10 0 0 0 10 -82.8% 71 0 90 338 499 69.7% J ul-11 46 0 12 0 58 199 4 16 75 294 City of H amilton J ul-12 112 0 95 0 207 38.9% 815 52 452 66 1385 66.5% J ul-11 80 0 53 16 149 502 2 241 87 832 Grimsby J ul-12 2 0 0 0 2 -80.0% 24 0 70 0 94 42.4% J ul-11 10 0 0 0 10 66 0 0 0 66 H alton H ills J ul-12 5 0 25 0 30 130.8% 28 0 25 0 53 23.3% J ul-11 4 0 9 0 13 32 2 9 0 43 Milton J ul-12 62 54 116 75 307 288.6% 346 84 467 77 974 4.8% J ul-11 77 2 0 0 79 496 16 201 216 929 Oakville J ul-12 14 0 0 0 14 -80.8% 152 0 227 136 515 -23.5% J ul-11 50 0 23 0 73 369 32 272 0 673 S ource: CMHC *Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) includes the City of Hamilton, Burlington, and Grimsby.
