By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The days of smoking in Oakville's public parks and along its trails may be drawing to a close. Town staff is expected present council with a report on Monday, July 9 outlining options for banning smoking in Town parks. These options include a complete smoking ban on Town parkland and open spaces as well as lands that have community centres, fire stations libraries and other Town facilities. Under this option, smoking would also be banned on playing fields, Pam Damoff playground splash pads, woodlots, trails, harbours and parking lots at recreation centres and libraries. Another option would ban smoking within 10 metres of facilities within public parks where children typically play while a third option would refer the matter to Halton Region. The issue was briefly discussed during Monday's council meeting with Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff calling on council to endorse some form of ban and then seek public consultation on exactly what form it should take. "There's over 50 municipalities that have passed outdoor smoke-free bylaws to protect the health of their citizens," said Damoff.
