The OSC, in partnership with the Town of Oakville, will hold a celebrity soccer game Thursday, July 5 at Bronte Athletic Field. Expected participants include Canadian Football League legend Michael (Pinball) Clemons, former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Rob Butler and Canadian national soccer team alumni Jason de Vos, Kara Lang, Michele Houchen and Clare Rustad. Clemons, a longtime resident of Oakville, was the CFL's most outstanding player in 1990 and won four Grey Cup champions with the Toronto Argonauts (one as a coach). Butler, a native of East York, Ont., was part of the Jays' World Series championship squad in 1993. De Vos, who played professionally in Europe and also made 49 appearances for the Canadian men's team, recently stepped down as the OSC's technical director to concentrate on his duties as a TSN soccer analyst. Lang is an OSC product who represented Canada at two FIFA World Cups and the 2008 Olympics before retiring at the age of 24, due to knee problems. Houchen made two appearances with the Canadian women's soccer team, was inducted into the Oakville Sport Hall of Fame in 2007 and is currently a coach in the OSC system. Rustad played for Canada in the 2008 Olympics, alongside Lang. Proceeds from the celebrity game will benefit the OSC's fee assistance program, which allows children in Oakville the opportunity to play soccer, regardless of cost. Tickets are available for $10 at the Pine Glen Soccer Centre. All seating is general admission, and no tickets will be sold the day of the game. Gates open at 6 p.m., with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. No parking will be available at Bronte Athletic Park, but spectators wearing their wristband will be allowed to ride Oakville Transit to and from the game for free any time after 5 p.m. on July 5. A special shuttle bus will operate from the Bronte GO Station July 5 as well, free after 6 p.m. for any fans wearing a wristband. Long-distance ace dashes to gold By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLEBEAVERSTAFF Initially not too thrilled with the idea, Evelyne Guay's transformation is almost complete. "I think I'm becoming more of a sprinter than a long-distance runner," said the Grade 10 Abbey Park student. Saturday in Brockville, Guay drew from both disciplines to win the junior girls 800-metre race at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) track and field championships, winning a tightly-contested race in which the top four runners were separated by less than six-tenths of a second. Guay's winning time of two minutes, 17.23 seconds edged Sydenham's Nicole Armstrong by 0.34 seconds. Armstrong went to the front early and Guay stayed within striking distance. With 130m remaining, Guay made her move. By the 75m mark she had pulled even and then moved in front down the final stretch, beating Armstrong and two other hard-charging rivals to the line. "I felt the girls coming on so I just wanted to go as hard as I could," Guay said. "I was happy I didn't have See Aquinas, page 45 The `Lightest and Strongest' Marble and Granite in the World 905.892.5733 www.TheWorldOfMarbleAndGranite.com
