Pass it on Van Koeverden earns another K-1 paddling medal Burloak Canoe Club product Adam van Koeverden earned his second straight World Cup medal, taking a silver medal in a tightly contested K-1 (kayak singles) 1,000m race in Duisburg, Germany Saturday. The top three paddlers were separated by less than seven-tenths of a second, with Aleh Yurenia of f Belarus taking first in three minutes, 26.286 seconds, followed by van Koeverden in 3:26.672. Eirik Veraas Larsen of Norway took the bronze in 3:26.906. Earlier this month, Van Koeverden earned a bronze medal at the season-opening meet in Poland. Oakville's Mallorie Nicholson and partner Laurence Vincent-Lapointe repeated their gold medal performance in the C-2 (canoe pairs) 500m, winning by more than four seconds over Russia's Natalia Marasanova and Anastasia Ganina. The Canadian pair showed its dominance in the sport, finishing one-two in the C-1 200m for the second time in a row. This time it was Vincent-Lapointe winning in 49.958 seconds, followed by Nicholson in 51.001. Nicholson upset the defending world champ to claim gold in the World Cup opener. Burloak members Mark Oldershaw and Aaron Rublee joined forces with Canadian teammate Jason McCoombs and Ben Russell to win a bronze medal in the C-1 4x200m relay. Oldershaw, who won the season-opening C-1 1,000m, narrowly missed the podium. He was fourth in a time of 3:48.352. France's Mathieu Goubel took third in 3:48.224. Burloak's Brady Reardon was also in contention for a podium finish, placing fourth in the K-1 500m. The Merchants erased an 8-4 second-period deficit with six consecutive goals, but Oakville rallied back in the third period to take a 12-11 lead. Brooklin, however, scored the final four goals of the contest. Simon Desousa had one goal and five assists in the loss for Oakville, with Nicholas Grasby adding a goal and four helpers. Jeff Sehl (three goals, one assist) and Tyler Laplane (one goal, three assists) each contributed four-point outings. Oakville's other goals came off the sticks of Shane Scott (two), Stu Gordon, Miller Rusbridge, Mark White and Ken Coulson. John Preece took the loss in net. The Titans (4-4) will visit the Norwood Champs Sunday, their lone action of the upcoming weekend.
