Slow it down in construction zones Halton police are reminding residents that if they speed through construction zones they should be prepared to pay hefty fines. With the arrival of warmer weather, local roads are seeing an increase in construction activity. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zones and keep a safe distance from work crews. Motorists should be prepared for quick changes in traffic flow and pay attention to detours and other road signs. Police said drivers must also follow the reduced speed signs, if posted, and motorists caught speeding while workers are present will see their fines doubled. The Halton Regional Police Service will be keeping an eye on construction areas in the upcoming weeks. As construction zones are difficult to avoid during the summer, residents should plan ahead, use alternate routes when available and be patient. Police said the spot check, which was conducted in partnership with the Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety at Oakville's Town Hall, checked 126 vehicles -- 96 failed. Although the clinic was aimed at educating the public, one driver was charged for having a four-year-old child in no car seat at all. This driver was given a free car seat before being allowed to leave the spot check. Police said studies have shown that by using a child safety seat properly, the chance of a child being killed or injured in a collision can be reduced by 75 per cent.
