Bank bed race is Sunday Trustee resigns from public board in downtown Oakville The Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge Race Day returns Sunday as several local banks come together to raise funds for a single cause -- Oakville's hospital. Hosted by the Oakville Hospital Foundation, the seventh annual event will see the racing of hospital beds by local bankers through downtown Oakville along Lakeshore Road. Last year, the competition raised more than $155,000, bringing its six-year total to more than $755,000 -- enough to purchase approximately 50 beds for the community hospital. Each year, six local banks have the month of April to compete in raising the most funds for the hospital. The fundraising campaign concludes with the Bank Bed Challenge Race Day (May 6), which takes place on Lakeshore Road East downtown. Bank teams race their personally decorated hospital bed and compete to win awards for fastest bed, as well as top fundraising branch and bank, and team spirit. The event will run from 9 a.m.-noon on the day. Halton Hills trustee Gillian Tuck Kutarna resigned from the Halton District School Board at Wednesday's board meeting. The former board chair is serving her second term. The resignation will become effective as soon as the school board finds a replacement. "I started a new job this past November and I've struggled to be able to do both things well," she said of her decision to resign. "My family has been really patient over the years, but something had to go." Fellow trustees at the board table expressed their sorrow at seeing their colleague leave. "I've always thought Gillian provided a very firm foundation to stand," said board chair Don Vrooman. One option is to have an election, at the board's expense. The other option is to fill the seat through an appointment through an applicant interview process.
