These feelings remain and are channelled into a desperate and painful search that may never end. This sad truth became all too clear Thursday evening as the organization Ontario's Missing Adults held a candlelight vigil to shine a light on the thousands of missing people in Canada, the unique agony their families face of `not knowing' and the crucial role the public can play in solving these mysteries. About 40 people attended the event held at Oakville's Hilton Garden Inn. Some of those present had family members who had been missing for as little as six months, while others had loved ones who have been lost for more than a decade. Rob Joly spoke to the group about his son Luke Joly-Durocher, who disappeared March 4, 2011 from North Bay, ON, at the age of 20. "Words can't describe how a parent deals with a missing loved one," he said. "As a parent you feel sort of guilty inside.. Parents are supposed to look after their children." Joly said he was the last one to speak to Luke before his disappearance. The conversation was uneventful with Luke asking if his father was still giving him a ride the following day. "The next morning it was my daughter's birthday and Sarah said, `We've got to have Luke at my birthday party.' So we went out and searched for him. We didn't know exactly where he was, but I told Sarah it was going to be fine and that teenagers were like that, they sleep most of the day and that he'd text us later," said Joly. "A couple of days later, Luke's mother phoned me and asked if I'd heard from Luke. I said `No.' We contacted the police and from then on we've been searching for him. It's been almost 14 months now. It seems like forever." Joly described his son as a gentle young man who loved life and with whom Joly was very close. Luke's disappearance, Joly said, took a terrible toll on his family as his obsession with finding Luke caused him to push everything else away. Joly cautioned those present not to do the same. "I forgot I had a wife. Forgot I had a life. You get so consumed by looking for ideas, talking to people, meeting people. I talked to people that, before See Members page 11 DAVID LEA / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog SEARCHING: Rob Joly speaks about his son Luke Joly-Durocher who disappeared March 4, 2011 from North Bay, Ont., at the age of 20.
