Halton basketball, volleyball finals this week Local high school boys' basketball and girls' volleyball teams seek Halton championships this week at Sheridan College. The boys' basketball finals were scheduled to be contested today (Wednesday), with girls' volleyball slated for tomorrow (Thursday). Today's basketball action was to be tipped off by a midget clash between the White Oaks Wildcats and Burlington's Corpus Christi Longhorns at 10:30 a.m. That was to be followed up by an allBurlington junior Tier 2 clash between the Robert Bateman Wild and Aldershot Lions at 12:15 p.m. The last three games of the day all involved local squads. The T.A. Blakelock Tigers were to take on Burlington's Lester B. Pearson Patriots in the senior Tier 2 final at 2 p.m., the Holy Trinity Titans were to meet Corpus Christi in the junior Tier 1 title game at 3:45 p.m., and the Titans and Burlington's Notre Dame Fighting Irish were to cap the day of action with the senior Tier 1 final at 5:30 p.m. As of press time, only two Oakville squads had earned berths in tomorrow's six volleyball championship games. The Abbey Park Eagles will clash with Burlington's Assumption Crusaders in the junior AAA final at 1 p.m. while the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders draw Pearson in the junior AA championship game at 2:30 p.m. Spots in both the junior and senior AAAA finals were still up for grabs as of yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. Trinity was at the Georgetown Rebels and the Loyola Hawks visited Burlington's Nelson Lords in the senior AAAA semifinals, while White Oaks traveled to Nelson and the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils were in Georgetown for the junior AAAA semis. The other two finals (senior AAA and senior AA) will not involve Oakville teams. Coverage of today's basketball games will appear in Friday's edition of the Beaver. Volleyball coverage will appear in next Wednesday's edition of the Beaver, but will also be available online by Friday afternoon at www.oakvillebeaver. com. Blades/Sabres underway The Oakville Blades opened their Ontario Junior Hockey League West Division semifinal series with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres last night (Tuesday) at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, a game that began after the Beaver's press deadlines. The best-of-seven series resumes tomorrow (Thursday) in Buffalo for Game 2. Oakville will then host Game 3 of the series Saturday (7:30 p.m.). The Blades had a first-round bye in the playoffs, while Buffalo eliminated the Hamilton Red Wings 3-0 in its best-of-five quarter-final series. 19 · Wednesday, February 22, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com SUMMER NON-CONTACT H · Non-contact · Prime time games · Trophies · Individual entries · Balanced teams ADULT OCKE LEAGUE Y Three Trinity swimmers each qualified in two events Continued from page 18 HALTON MEN'S HOCKEY LEAGUE th SUMMER SEASON! 28th her coach. "She's a good distance swimmer," StearnsBrown said. "She can pace herself well." McNeil and Georgetown's Kristen Davison have had a good rivalry all season. That served McNeil well at GHAC, where she cut 3.65 seconds off her time from the Halton championships. Alex Hayman is the only other Oakville swimmer, and the youngest, set to compete in three events at OFSAA after qualifying for the junior boys 50m breaststroke and the 100m individual medley. He is also a member of OT's junior boys 200m freestyle relay team. Stearns-Brown said Hayman has already emerged as a key contributor in his first year on the team. "He's worked with other swimmers on their strokes," she said. "He's a team player. Even though he's only in Grade 9, he's a leader, and not just in terms of his speed." Several other Oakville swimmers have qualified for OFSAA in both their individual events, including three from Holy Trinity. Amy Shubert will swim the senior girls 50m and 100m freestyle. Abraham Lozano will compete in the senior boys 50m and 100m butterfly, and Alyson Smith qualified in the open girls 100m breaststroke and 100m IM.
