Luke Holmes would have celebrated his sixth birthday this February had his heart not lost a battle against congenital heart disease in 2007. His parents, Carolyn and Troy, decided to set up the Sweethearts for SickKids ­ Luke's Legacy Fundraiser in 2009 in memory of their son and to perhaps help spare another family from going through what they did. Entering its fourth year, the Feb. 12 fundraiser will be showcasing several celebrity-decorated 10-inch cookies for silent auction, including that of Oakville resident Anne-Marie Mediwake. "As a mom of three young kids, I cannot imagine the loss felt by Luke's family. It's their love for Luke that comes through in Luke's Legacy and motivates their desire to help others in need," Mediwake told The Oakville Beaver. "This is my first year contributing and as I decorated our cookie with my three kids, it gave us a chance to talk about helping others, and being grateful for all we have -- health, family and each other." Several local celebrities decorated 10-inch cookies for a silent auction as part of this Sunday's fundraising event at Whole Foods Market in Oakville. are born with a heart defect, and more than half require surgery -- Luke was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome/Critical Aortic Stenosis, which meant the entire left side of his heart was underdeveloped, including the left (pumping) ventricle and aortic and mitral valves. "(Luke's Legacy) is our way of remembering Luke for the strong, courageous little fighter that he was," Carolyn said in a news release. "Despite being jabbed with needles, suffering with acid reflux and, in the end, enduring the pain of his organs failing, he still always had a smile and hug to give." The silent auction for the fundraiser will also include celebrity-decorated cookies from former Toronto Argonauts star Michael "Pinball" Clemons, Tracey Moore, Bryan Baeumler, Susan Hay, Roger Ashby, Darren B. Lamb and Marilyn Denis, and Erica Ehm, to name a few. Local celebrity Nathan McLeod and Mayor Rob Burton will also be at the event to decorate a cookie for auction as well. Those who attend the fundraiser this Sunday, held at Whole Foods Market (301 Cornwall Rd.) in Oakville, can buy a heart-shaped, nut-free sugar cookie for $5 to decorate with icing and candy -- the event runs from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. All proceeds will go to SickKids' Cardiac Critical Care Unit where Luke underwent openheart surgery before his first birthday. "This year, families can make the Valentine's celebrations with their loved ones especially meaningful by helping to heal the precious hearts of children who suffer from the same condition that took Luke's young life," stated the release. Last year, the event raised more than $20,000 -- four times the amount raised during its inaugural year in 2009. This year, organizers are hoping to raise at least another $20,000 for the second year in a row. Turtle Jack's Muskoka Grill in Oakville (360 Dundas St. E.) is also helping out the cause by donating a percentage of their sales on Sunday, Feb. 19 -- the restaurant's Mississauga location (980 Southdown Rd.) will also be donating a portion from its sales on Thursday, Feb. 16.
