www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, January 18, 2012 · 4 Boys have support from the community Continued from page 1 Katherine, 43, was found stabbed to death in her Treetop Terrace residence on Thursday at around noon. At about the same time, Kyle, 43, was fatally shot by Halton police during an altercation. Kyle arrived at the police station, located at 95 Oak Walk Dr., and began damaging vehicles in the parking lot. Halton police have yet to officially link the two incidents, but said they are pursuing that possibility. The Newmans leave behind three children: Thomas, Joshua and James. Those who knew the couple within Oakville's hockey community are still trying to comprehend last week's tragic events. "They were both very nice people," said Cathy McCrory, who manages the hockey team one of the three children plays on. "We are just as shocked and upset as everyone else." McCrory said she met Kyle and Katherine in the fall after their child made it to the Atom MD level. She dealt primarily with Katherine, but said Kyle would also attend his son's games. "They were both very pleasant and polite people with us," said McCrory. McCrory said her thoughts now turn to the boys on her hockey team and how she will approach them with this subject. She also spoke about the importance of supporting the couple's son if he chooses to return. "I hope he does," said McCrory. Hockey coach Bill Dodge, who coached the Newmans' youngest child, and works at The Oakville Beaver, said he was aware the couple was undergoing some kind of marital separation, but said it was never apparent when they interacted with each other in his presence. The only indication anything was wrong between the two came in more subtle ways. "There was a bit of animosity in the sense that if (their child) missed a practice, Katherine would want to know about it and see documentation on it. She seemed to be keeping a close eye on what Kyle was doing," said Dodge. "Also, at the beginning of the season, Kyle said he wasn't being copied on information about the practices and so he asked me to keep him involved." At one point, Dodge said he felt compelled to ask if there were any legal issues regarding the couple of which he should be aware. He was told no and both parents continued to participate in their children's hockey activities. Dodge said his last communication from the family was that they would be leaving on a ski trip to Vermont on Thursday and the boys would not be attending hockey practice over the weekend. That trip would never take place. "I was absolutely, absolutely shocked when I heard what hap- pened," said Dodge. "These poor boys. You look at it and it kind of makes you look at your own life." While he hasn't had any interaction with the Newman brothers since the tragic events, Dodge said their family members appear to be attempting to introduce some normalcy back into their lives. "I got e-mails saying the older brother was out to hockey on Sunday," he said. "(The boy I coach) was at that game and the coach there e-mailed me and said he is really anxious to get out and (be) involved." Dodge said he was planning to take the team, clad in their jerseys, to Katherine's visitation yesterday (Tuesday). A funeral mass will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church at 11 Wilson St. W. in Ancaster.
