R.I.D.E. wrapped up its 2011 holiday blitz Halton Regional Police said 10 people were charged with impaired driving offences in Oakville during this year's holiday R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign. The annual campaign, which lasted from Dec. 1-31, saw Halton police stop a total of 17,396 vehicles across the region. These stops resulted in 564 roadside breath tests being conducted -- with a total of 37 people arrested for impaireddriving offences. Of those arrested, 18 were stopped in Burlington, 10 were stopped in Oakville and nine were stopped in Milton, Acton and Georgetown. Halton police say they continue to be baffled that people still make the choice to drink and drive in this day and age. "The numbers would seem to indicate there is still a portion of society out there that continue to ingest alcohol and/or drugs and then attempt to operate a motor vehicle," said Sgt. "Considering the legislation against this has been in place for 90 years, this (the fact that impaired driving is illegal) shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The event runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd. It will give students the opportunity to write and recite spoken word pieces reflecting on and celebrating strength in cultural diversity. Students will also develop an understanding of prejudice as well as the consequences of discrimination, and the relationship between racism and hate crimes. Admission is free for youths aged 12-25.
