The Oakville Fire Department was called to the school at around 10:20 a.m., where firefighters succeeded in stopping the fire from spreading beyond the washroom. "It was a set fire," said Platoon Chief Gerry Lieferink, Oakville Fire Department. "Paper towel rolls in the stalls were what was set on fire. So one of the stalls now is pretty much toast. It was not a very large blaze. They (firefighters) put it out with an extinguisher. There was a lot of smoke; smoke caused most of the damage." Despite damage to the stall, Lieferink said overall damage to the washroom and the school was not extensive, although it did take a few hours to clear all the smoke from the building. Students and staff were initially evacuated outside the school, but were soon moved to the school's gymnasium and portables to keep warm after it was determined the fire was not a threat. "My friend saw it," said Grade 12 student Jared Martini. "He went to use the washroom and saw this huge fire so he ran out and pulled the fire alarm. Later, he sent us this text saying, `Hey guys, I saved your lives this morning.'" Martini and most other students at the school said they didn't know anything was wrong until the school's fire alarm went off. Paper rolls were found to have been set ablaze in a second-storey washroom stall. No one was injured. The high school was initially evacuated, but classes resumed for the day. One student joked they were glad for the early break. Another student said the event was unusual for Loyola, stating this is the first time he is aware of an actual fire taking place there. Classes at Loyola resumed the same day. While the fire may not have been significant in size, it did succeed in tying up multiple fire trucks for more than an hour. Six fire trucks and one platoon chief were initially called to the scene, staffed by a total of 21 Oakville firefighters. Halton police and the Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Unit have launched an investigation of the fire. Police were reportedly interviewing students Tuesday.
