Man shot and killed by police, woman found dead By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A man was shot and killed in a Halton police station parking lot yesterday morning shortly before the body of a mother of three young boys was discovered in a home a few kilometres away. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is now investigating the police station shooting, said that around 11:45 a.m., an unidentified man was seen causing damage in the parking lot of the 20 Division Police Station, at 95 Oak Walk Dr., near Dundas Street. Officers went to deal with the situation and an altercation ensued that resulted in the death of the man. "I heard five or six pops and that was it," said one witness who was working nearby. "Then everybody was running over there." Another witness reported emergency personnel were performing CPR on the victim. An ambulance was called to the scene, but did not remove anyone and could be seen stationary in the parking lot. Halton police reported that no officers were harmed during the incident. They would not say if the man was armed. At around noon, police could be seen cordoning off the area with yellow police tape and examining the scene for clues. At the police station parking lot, it appeared a collision between a Halton police SUV and a grey Nissan sedan had taken place prior to the shooting. The driver's door of the Nissan was open; its lights and windshield wipers were still on. A body could also be seen, covered by a bloodspattered tarp. The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the shooting. At around the same time as the incident at the police station was taking place, Halton police tactical officers and those from the homicide unit descended on a townhouse at 1151 Treetop Terrace where a woman's body was found. Police reported an acquaintance of the woman arrived at the home and, upon entering, discovered the woman unresponsive inside and immediately called police. The victim has been identified as Katherine Newman, 43, of Oakville. Newman is the daughter of a well-known retired former superior court justice Walter Stayshyn of Hamilton. Police are not saying whether this incident is linked to the shooting at the police station. Members of the Halton Regional Police Service Tactical Rescue Unit could be seen entering the Treetop Terrace residence with automatic weapons drawn. A short time later, Forensic Services arrived on the scene. As the SIU was holding a media conference at its Peel head office, Halton police and SIU investigators were also present at an Owl Ridge Drive address where they were seen speaking with a woman. There were unconfirmed reports the woman was related to the victim of the police shooting. At Treetop Terrace, residents struggled to understand what happened. "She was a good neighbour," said one area resident who asked not to be identified. "This is very sad. I'm afraid for her children and also for myself." Many area residents said they heard and saw nothing out of the ordinary Thursday, until Halton police cruisers swarmed onto the small residential street. A uniform police officer showed up at the home and left the scene visibly upset. Area resident Gail Korol said the woman living at 1151 Treetop Terrace had only moved into the neighbourhood during the summer. "If it's who I think it is, she has young children. They play hockey," she said. "I don't know if she lived with a man." Peggy Wallace, who also lives in the area, said the day's events were completely out of character for the Treetop Terrace area. "It's usually quiet here, very quiet," she said. "The only thing that makes noise is the traffic, sometimes."
