Shortly after a man was shot and killed in the parking lot of an Oakville police station on Thursday morning, officers from the Halton police tactical and homicide units descended on a townhouse located at 1151 Treetop Terrace. A neighbour of the Treetop Terrace address confirmed to The Oakville Beaver r that the residence under investigation was that of Katherine Newman. Halton police, late Thursday, reported that shortly before noon that day, a woman contacted police to report the suspicious death of an Oakville woman. The witness had arrived at the victim's residence and upon entering, discovered the victim inside to be unresponsive and immediately contacted police. Members of the Halton Regional Police Service Homicide Unit have assumed the investigation. Newman is reported to be the mother of three young children and the daughter of a recently retired Hamilton Superior Court Justice Walter Stayshyn. Newman grew up in Ancaster, where she attended high school. She was educated at the University of Western Ontario and did her post-graduate degree at the University of Toronto, receiving a bachelor of science in nursing and a master of health sciences. Newman's family has been active and well-known in the Hamilton community. Her father, a former Superior Court Justice, was the auditor of the Hamilton Law Association, he has been involved with Legal Aid as chairman and director and president of the Hamilton Lawyers Club. Aside from the law, he has been involved in the health community in a number of capacities. Newman's mother, the late Katherine Josephine Stayshyn, had a lifelong dedication to volunteering in the community. Newman's aunt, Irene Stayshyn is a member of the Hamilton Police Services Board.
