Galleries open winter shows Oakville Galleries is opening up a pair of art exhibits this weekend with an opening reception for each on Sunday. The Gairloch Gardens location will feature the Bright Limit t show, featuring the work of Montreal artist Chris Kline. Centennial Square will host the Hyper Spaces exhibit, which features work by a group of artists. Kline's paintings explore the history of abstract painting, using a restrained palette of colours and materials. "Chris Kline's remarkable paintings are particularly well-suited to exhibition at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, where Gairloch Gardens and the expansive horizon of Lake Ontario can be seen from each of the gallery spaces," said curator Marnie Fleming. "The gardens change before our eyes almost daily, as does the horizon out our window, but it is altogether too easy to overlook these incremental changes as they take place. Chris's work directs us back to these moments, recognizing the subtle beauty that lies in such slowness." Hyper Spaces features the works of José Manuel Ballester, An Te Liu and Lynne Marsh. The works explore urban architecture and public spaces and how they relate to ideas of tension and anxiety. "In encountering these artworks, there is a sense that the ground is no longer quite stable at our feet, and our surroundings no longer feel quite right," said curator Shannon Anderson. "It seems as though `up' could just as easily be `down.'" The Bright Limit t exhibit runs until Feb. 19, while Hyper Spaces closes on March 4. The opening reception will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St., and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E. The artists and curator Fleming will be present to speak about the art.
