Scholz, Canada earn first Pan Am rugby gold Continued from page 30 31 · Friday, November 4, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com SPORT TBRIEFS the round robin undefeated. The next day Canada started with a 45-0 win over Mexico in the quarter-finals, then edged the U.S. 21-19 in the semis. In the final, Canada overcame a 12-7 halftime deficit to build a 26-19 lead. Argentina scored a try as time expired giving it a chance to send the game into overtime with a convert. Scholz watched nervously as Argentina attempted the convert. "That was a nailbiter," he said. "I had my fingers crossed, hoping he'd miss and seeing that go wide was awesome." The sevens game was developed to help market the sport, providing a shorter version of the game that could be played at events such as the Olympics. While the Rugby World Cup was played over five weeks and four days between games was considered a short rest, it was much different at the Pan Am Games where the entire tournament was played in ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER two days. Mike Scholz displays his gold medal he won with "It's more of an endurance game," the 23 Canada's rugby sevens at the Pan Am Games. year old said. "You only have an hour and a half or two hours between games. You pretty much have time to cool down, stretch, have a shower and then start warming up for the next game." And with just seven players on the field as opposed to the traditional 15, the game takes on a different look. "It's the same basic skill set but the attacking and defensive structures are different," Scholz said. "It's a pretty significant difference. It's almost like playing three-on-three hockey. There's a whole bunch of space out there." Regardless of what version of the sport is being played, Scholz hopes Canada's success will help the game continue to grow. In addition to having access to more funding with its inclusion in the Olympics, Scholz hopes the attention focused on rugby in the last couple of months will help build the game. "Nobody saw rugby on TV (until the World Cup)," he said. "It's getting a lot of exposure lately and hopefully that gets a lot of younger kids playing the game." "She understands the flow of the game," said Cater of the Grade 11 student who is now in her third year with the varsity team. "Playing on the team for three years, she has really good game sense and the ability to attack. Inga and Jacqueline Hanson play off each other really well and one or the other is always there to tip it in." With nine graduating players, many of whom played on Appleby's junior CISAA finalist team, Cater said she knew Appleby had the makings of a strong team. They lost just one game in the regular season -- to St. John's Kilmarnock, which won four straight Ontario high school championships between 2006 and 2009. Appleby also won a bronze medal at an international tournament hosted by St. John's Kilmarnock. "We had a group of students so devoted to what they are doing," Cater said. Their biggest strength, though, was their teamwork, the Appleby coach said. They really know they can rely on each other." Almost like a family. And speaking of family, another family connection was discovered as the team celebrated its victory. As the team looked at the champions' plaque, they saw Appleby's name last engraved in 1999. That year Cater's sister played on the team. The previous victory, in 1997, Cater played for Appleby.
