Sprague said an NDP gov- ernment would continue the pilot project of an airshed man- agement system for the Oakville- Clarskon area. Chlobowski said the Green Party would also legislate prop- er buffer zones for gas power plants. Asking the Green Party what our stand is on the issue of the buffer zone for gas power plants is like asking Graham Bell if he knows who invented the telephone, he added. Scott said his party would restore the power of towns and cities to decide what happens within their boundaries, which was taken away by the province in 2006 when the Portlands plant was proposed for Toronto. In his release, Flynn also attacked the local PCs, saying the party has an embarrassing track record on power plants in the community. Scott defended his position at the time the power plant was discussed and noted he was then working for Oakville Conservative MP Terence Young. Our position was that it was a crazy idea and if we had the opportunity, we would chal- lenge it under the federal envi- ronmental legislation. Of course it had to go through the prov- ince, he said. I know Ted Chudleigh reg- ularly tried to talk sense into everybody. Clearly, having a power plant so close to homes and schools was a tremendous threat to safety and after the disaster in Connecticut. Flynn also stated Scott told Town Council the Conservatives were a little slow on the uptake when he was campaign manag- ing for Young. Scott said he was reading a statement on behalf of Young at the time and there was more to the quote. It probably went some- thing like this: We were a little slow on the uptake because Terence Young didnt believe anybody would be foolish enough to actually put a power plant in that location. Flynn noted Scotts cam- paign manager, which Scott identified as Lee St. James, sug- gested Glen Abbey would be a better location for the plant. However, Scott has seen a transcript of her comments to council, which he said were: Thank you very much for try- ing to stop the power plant, town council. I appreciate that. I have a two-year-old child. Its a great idea. Ive read all the docu- mentation. You left one section out and youd be wise to cover that as well because you cant NDP and Green say they'd agree to buffer zones say to the Ontario government we would never take a power plant. Youre better to tell the Ontario government we would never take a power plant unless it met these criteria. Flynn attacked Scott for refusing to answer C4CAs question on whether a PC gov- ernment would continue the air quality pilot project. Scott said its a good idea but he isnt sure what his par- tys position on the issue is. You can get hung up on all these kinds of assessments, he said. I think the reality of anybody who lives in Oakville is that we know the air quality is very poor here. I would really like to see the money spent on things that improve the quality of life for the people here or the quality of air. He said reducing traffic congestion on the QEW would reduce idling pollution and be a good start to clean up air pol- lution in the area. Continued from page 8 Lesley Sprague Andrew Chlobowski
