Her nephew, Ethan Malicki turned seven this year and in lieu of birthday gifts, he directed funds to help his cousin, Heidi's son, Callum Blackburn. Last year, Malicki did the same thing for the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society (which is the national charity for Callums syn- drome). This year, Malicki chose to direct his birthday funds to the Darling Home for Kids, which provides respite to families with children with life limiting or life-threaten- ing illness and paediatric hospice palliative care. The home serves families across the province, including many fami- lies in Oakville and Halton. Malicki raised $250 and inspired Joti Jando, owner of Personal Training with Joti (www.trainwith- joti.com) to also do something to help. Jando decided to host a hot yoga night inviting all of her clients and friends and in lieu of birthday pres- ents asked for a donation to the home. Her efforts raised a further $475. I am amazed each day by what others are willing to do to help one of Callum's causes," said Heidi. Callum was born in the sum- mer of 2004. In the summer of 2005, he was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome (AS), a condi- tion of which most people have not even heard. The unexpected diagnosis has led Callum to become an ambassa- dor for awareness of Angelman. He is even featured in a YouTube video geared to do just that, create aware- ness. It is part of the SpeakOut4AS campaign. They cannot speak, have seizures and require assistance to eat and walk if they can walk at all. They also have sleep dis- turbances and can be awake two to five hours each night. Callum has a support- ive immediate and extended family, but needs 24-hour supervision, according to his mom. He also has a live-in care- giver, a nurse two nights a week, support care each weekend and 15 medical people involved in his care. And he has physical, occupational and speech therapy lessons weekly, along with numerous medi- cal appointments. Much of the additional costs are borne by his fami- ly. Heidi embraces support that helps raise awareness of the little-known Angelman Syndrome, which is a rare genetic condition that causes a severe global devel- opment delay, making inde- pendent life impossible. Individuals with this condition suffer from feed- ing difficulties, severe sleep problems and uncontrolla- ble seizure activity and require 24-hour care. Callums family mem- bers are advocates for Angelman Syndrome and, according to his mom, Callum has a lot to teach the world. On the YouTube video created to raise awareness of AS, it states that people view Callum as a boy who doesnt speak, but his mom sees him as a boy who needs no words.
