Town officials contacted the Oakville Fire Department, the Ministry of the Environments Spill Action Centre and Halton Region Spill Response Team shortly after the slick was first seen at around 3 p.m. It came from somewhere in the lake, were not sure. The wind was blowing it towards the marina and they found it on the outside, said Alan Connelly, general manager, Bronte Harbour. It was coming through the opening of the break wall and kind of got trapped here. Halton police closed and cordoned off the entrance to the inner harbour for approximately 45 minutes over concerns a boat passing through the slick might acci- dentally ignite it. Oakville firefighters and others threw special booms into the water to contain and absorb the slick. Connelly said much of the spill was absorbed and what was not, dissipated. Despite an extensive search by the Town, TOWARF (Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force), the Ministry of the Environment and others, the source of the The Halton District School Board has filled two executive position vacancies at a special meeting Thursday, Aug. 4. Trustees approved the appoint- ments of a new superintended of education and executive officer of human resources, after the positions became vacant in the last school year. Rob Eatough was appointed as superintendent of education. This replaces the position made vacant by Jeff Blackwell who became associate director after his predecessor Ruth Peden retired. Eatough has 18 years experience in education. He started out as a teacher in Toronto. He later became vice-principal and principal of several Halton schools. Debra McFadden was appointed to the position of executive officer of human resources. She is replacing the retired Dawn Beckett-Morton. McFadden comes to Halton after 25 years of HR experience in several educational institutions. "We are pleased to welcome Robert Eatough and Debra McFadden to the senior admin team, said spill could not be determined, however, there are theories. It was determined that it was probably from a boat either tied up on the outside of the break wall on the river or a boat that was passing by that had a leak or discharge of bilge, said Connelly. It looked to me like a mix of oily bilge water and diesel. Connelly said it is also hard to deter- mine exactly how much fuel the spill con- sisted of, stating spills of this sort can look far worse than they actually are. You can put a table spoon of gasoline or diesel in the water and it makes this huge slick because it will go to basically a micron-thin film, he said. Saying how much product was there is very difficult. Oakville Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Brian Durdin called the spill rela- tively minor and said fire crews were on the scene for about two hours. Durdin also said Town officials and members of the Halton Region Spill Response Team would revisit the area to make sure the spill is really gone and has not accumulated again. Director of Education David Euale, in a press release. Both individuals have substantial experience in educa- tion, and their skills and dedication will be assets to the Halton District School Board and its students." Both positions become effective as of Sept. 1.
