The community theatre group is staging Amys View, written by British playwright David Hare, at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. It opens Thursday, Jan. 6. The play presents a look at the changing times in England, of the cottage days of old and the metropol- itan new world that has sprung up in more recent years. It talks more about the old England and the new England, said director Ken Stern. If you think of the old England as the thatched-cot- tages and the countryside of England and then theres this kind of brash new England of the new media and its a pretty different place. The play revolves around a well- known British live theatre actress named Esmllen, played by Oakvilles Maggie Luxford, who is caught in a changing world. Esms faced with the conflict presented to her by her daughters partner Dominic Tyghe, a movie critic on top of the new world of media. Dominic is played by Mischa Aravena. Hes very successful, Stern said. Hes sort of a (Quentin) Tarantino kind of figure. He gets into the movies and makes movies and has a TV chat show. Hes very successful in the media and that contrasts with Esmhos an actress in the West End in London. Between the two comes Esm daughter, Amy, the title character of the play. When Dominic enters the picture theres kind of a conflict, not only in their beliefs of art, but about how he treats Amy and (Esmfeels protec- tive of her daughter and doesnt like this intruder, although Amy is crazy about him, Stern said. Playing the role of Amy is Justine Jones, who recently moved from Oakville to Burlington. I totally understand her conflict because she adores her mother, yet shes fallen in love with this man who has very different ideas about life than her mother does, Jones said, explain- ing the character of Amy. Her view is that if you love every- body enough youll be able to over- come those obstacles and conflicts and she tries desperately to be the link between that new world of film and television and the older world of stage. So on stage, Jones will try to cre- ate that link between the two worlds. Jones, who majored in theatre at the University of California, is return- ing to the stage after 10 years. The stage is really where Im very comfortable so Im really glad I found my way back there. I feel like its good timing, she said. Jones has been living in Halton for the past two years, moving here after her husband, retired Canadian Football League all-star quarterback Khari Jones got a coaching job with Old England meets new England in Burl-Oak play DRAMATIC CONFLICT: Maggie Luxford plays Esmthe disapproving mother of Amy, played by Justine Jones and her son-in-law Dominic played by Mischa Aravena in the Burl-Oak Theatre Group's production of Amy's View, which runs on various dates between Jan. 6-9 and Jan. 12-15 at the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts.
