The leather wrapped steering wheel is heat- ed. With the third-row seats in use, there is still plenty of luggage space at the rear. Fold them down, and the cargo capacity enlarges considerably. On the road, the QX56 feels like the big, truck-based vehicle that it is, but for those who need to transport large groups of people in comfort and luxury, it does the trick as nicely as anything on the road. And despite the huge 22-inch wheels, the ride is surprisingly soft and comfortable. The suspension is independent double wish- bone front and rear with Dual Flow Path twin tube shock absorbers, stabilizer bars and an automatic rear leveling system. The speed- sensitive steering is light and doesnt provide a lot of feedback, but we have to remember people arent buying the QX56 expecting 370Z handling and road manners. Or course, safety features abound including dual stage front driver and passenger airbags, front side curtain airbags and three row cur- tain side impact airbags. There is also ABS and traction control, front and rear proximity sensors and tire pressure monitoring system. The new 5.6-litre V8 boasts 400 hp, enough to get this nearly three-ton vehicle (2,654 kg/5,850 lb) up to speed smoothly and capably. Meanwhile, the Infiniti all-mode 4WD system will come in handy for anyone heading to the cottage for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter months. The seven-speed automatic transmission works well and Infiniti says it is partially responsible for the 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy numbers. So, while a QX56 or any other full-size SUV like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LX560 or the Mercedes-Benz GL550, Audi Q7 or Range Rover Sport are not something I would need or want, there are those with the financial resources to purchase such a vehicle. For them, luxury, towing capacity and refine- ment may be the key features they require and youd be hard pressed to find anything better than the QX56 when it comes to any of those attributes. The interior of the Infiniti QX56 offers third-row seating without compromising the luggage space in the rear. Ford F-150 EcoBoost truck races Baja Metroland Newspapers Carguide Magazine The 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost race truck with the torture-tested hero engine finished one of the most grueling desert endurance races in the world the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in 38 hours and 20 minutes, after 1,061 miles. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine used to power the race truck performed spectacularly in the harsh terrain and extreme temperature swings of the Baja California Peninsula. The truck endured hard accelerations often at full throt- tle and stiff decelerations across the moun- tains at temperatures that swung between freezing and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Though the EcoBoost engine entered the race with the equivalent of 10 years worth of rugged use, its inherent performance advan- tages twin turbochargers and direct fuel injec- tion helped it complete the race. Earlier this fall, the engine was randomly selected off the line from the Cleveland Engine Plant to be put through a series of rugged exer- cises to test its long-term durability. It was installed in a 2011 F-150 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant then traveled to Oregon where it worked as a log skidder. Next, the truck towed 11,300 pounds at high speeds around a NASCAR track in Florida before towing up steep grades in Arizona against com- petitive trucks. Last week, the engine was removed from the F-150 and installed in a race truck to take on the extreme conditions and terrain of the Baja 1000 in Mexico. The EcoBoost truck engine produces a best- in-class 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm and 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. Up to 90 percent of its peak torque is available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm, which helps drivers stay in the power. The engine that powered the race truck goes next to Fords powertrain laboratory for a tear- down and inspection. A 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost took on the demanding Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 long-distance desert endurance race with the same stock EcoBoost engine that already has experienced 150,000 equiva- lent miles of dynamometer testing and other real-world tests as the final step in the engine's durabil- ity torture tests.
